Capital Liberation 70 years on

Hanoi is preparing a grand celebration to mark the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and Vietnam’s National Day, featuring a large-scale parade and commemorative ceremony.

State President Luong Cuong has highlighted that the restructuring of commune-level administrative units will unlock new development space for Hanoi — enabling the city to better fulfill its role as the spearhead and growth engine of the capital region, the northern key economic zone, and the entire nation.

The exhibition on 80-year national achievements must vividly portray Vietnam’s journey of safeguarding and building the nation, while inspiring national pride and aspiration as the country enters a new development era, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said on June 23.

To people around the world, President Ho Chi Minh is not only an outstanding leader and brilliant communist, but also a respected comrade, beloved teacher, and close friend.

A high-level delegation of the Party Central Committee, the State, the National Assembly, the Government, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee laid wreaths and paid tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum in Hanoi on the morning of May 19, commemorating the 135th anniversary of his birth (May 19, 1890 – May 19, 2025).

A solemn flag-raising ceremony took place at historic Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi on the morning of May 19 to mark the 135th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 – May 19, 2025). Also that morning, the central province of Nghe An held a flag-raising ceremony and hoisted a giant national flag at Ho Chi Minh Square in Vinh City to honour the late President’s birthday.

President Ho Chi Minh played a central and deeply influential role in guiding the Vietnamese people to victory during the resistance war against the US. He not only laid out a strategic vision for confronting American imperialism, but also served as the inspirational force behind its execution.

On April 21, 1950, in Roong Khoa hamlet, Diem Mac commune, Dinh Hoa district, Thai Nguyen province, the founding congress of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association was held. Over the past 75 years, the association has grown into a unifying and motivating force for journalists nationwide, helping them overcome immense challenges and fulfil the noble mission of revolutionary journalism. The association has contributed significantly to strengthening public trust in the Party and State.

In March 2025, Hanoi authorities officially approved plans to demolish the Shark Jaw to expand the Hoan Kiem Lake area and Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square. This marks a key step in the city’s urban renewal efforts, aiming for sustainable development. The municipal government has instructed relevant agencies to expedite the clearance process, with demolition set to be completed by April 30.

Long Bien Bridge is an outstanding cultural heritage site of Hanoi capital. The over-120-year work stands out by its timeless architecture, becoming one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, as well as a source of pride for the capital’s residents.

Looking back on the 95-year journey under the Party’s leadership, Vietnam has transformed from a poor and backward nation into a dynamic country with an increasingly prominent position on the world stage. This proves that, in Vietnam, no other political force than the Communist Party of Vietnam possesses sufficient mettle, intellect, experience, reputation, and leadership capabilities to guide the country through every difficulty and challenge, bringing the national revolutionary cause from one victory to others.

On December 19, 1946, President Ho Chi Minh issued “The appeal for the National Resistance”, calling on the entire Party, people, and armed forces to unite and rise up against French colonial invaders to regain national independence and freedom.

In December 1972, the Air Defence-Air Force played a crucial role in defeating the strategic bombing raid by B-52 bombers of US imperialists. This victory, known as “Hanoi – Dien Bien Phu in the air,” forced the US to sign the Paris Peace Accords on ending the war on January 27, 1973, paving the way for the complete liberation of the South of Vietnam and national reunification.

Hanoi achieves rather comprehensive results in its socio-economic development in 2024, with 23/24 targets completed or exceeded.

A Film Week marking the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam People’s Army is taking place from now until December 13 in Cao Bang Province and from December 19 to 25 nationwide.
